2019 has been an unusual year for a government that is beginning its term, due to the succession of crises that brought President Mario Abdo Benítez to the brink of impeachment. This article analyses the period by focusing on three dimensions: the overlapping of foreign and domestic policy, or “intermesticity”, the convulsed political front, and the economic crisis. The article concludes that 2020 will be a decisive year for determining whether the marked deterioration of the government’s political fortunes in its first year will be reversed and whether the opposition will be able to articulate a coherent and united opposition front for the future. How these two questions are resolved depends largely on the electoral scenario of 2023 and what the chances are for the success of the Colorado Party and the opposition.
